Warts are also known as verruca vulgaris. It is a small fleshy bump on the skin or mucous membrane caused by human papillomavirus.
Warts are caused by various strains of human papillomaviruses. Different strains may cause warts in different parts of the body. Warts can be spread from one location on the body to another or from person to person by contact with wart.
They are small, noncancerous, more likely to get one on your hands or feet and genitals.
There are 5 major types of warts:
- Common warts – usually grow on finger and toes. Have rough, grainy appearance and a rounded top. They are gray than surrounding skin.
- Plantar warts – It grows on soles of feet. It grows inside skin not out of it. It is small hole in bottom surrounded by hard skin making walking uncomfortable.
- Flat warts – It usually grow around mouth pr nose and sometimes on neck or under chin. They are flat top, pink, brownish, or slightly yellow.
- Filiform warts – It usually grows around mouth or nose and sometimes under chin. They are small, tiny flap skin or tag of skin. It has same color as of skin.
- Periungual warts – It usually grows under and around toenails and fingernails. They affect nail growth and can be painful
