Inflammation around hair follicle leads to the formation of abscess which is also known as Boils(furuncle). It is a painful, pus-filled bump under the skin caused by infected, inflamed hair follicles.

Boils forms under the skin when bacteria infect and inflame one or more hair follicles. The cluster of boils which forms a connected area of infection is called carbuncle. Carbuncle can cause severe and deeper infection and can leave a scar.

Furuncles usually appears as reddish or purplish, tender bumps. The bumps fills quickly with pus grows larger and more painful until they rupture and drain.  The face, back of the neck, armpits, thighs, and buttocks are the areas which are most likely to be affected. By pricking or squeezing the boil it may spread infection.

Three major type of boils are

  1. Cystic acne: deep seated boils which appears on face
  2. Hydradenitis suppurative: in armpits, painful boils due to infected sweat glands
  3. Pilonidal cyst: in the cleft between buttocks, the deep seated boils occurs

Symptoms

The symptoms of boils usually include:

  • Red, painful bump that begins out small and can enlarge up to more than 2 inch
  • Red or purple, swollen skin around the bump
  • As it fills with pus an increase in size of the bump over few days
  • Yellow-white tip that ruptures and allows pus to drain out develops
  • Fever
