What is ringworm?

Ringworm is the highly contagious infection of the skin or scalp. Ringworm is also known as dermatophytosis, dermatophyte infection or tinea corporis. It is usually circular rash, itchy with clearer skin in the middle caused by fungal infection.

Ringworm spreads through skin to skin contact with an infected person.

Different types of ringworm are :

Ringworm of scalp – tinea capitis

Ringworm of  body – tinea corporis

Ringworm of skin around groin, inner thighs, and buttock – jock itch (tinea cruris)

Ringworm of foot – Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)

Ringworm of face – tinea faciei

Ringworm of beard – tinea barbae

Ringworm of hand – tinea manuum

Ringworm of nails- tinea unguium

Symptom

The symptoms of ringworm includes :

  • Rashes of ring shape
  • Itching
  • Fissures
  • Patches that develop blisters
  • Red, scaly, cracked skin
  • Darkening of skin
  • Hair loss

Symptoms of ringworm begins within 4 to 14 days after skin comes in contact with the fungal infection.
